With a father like Abijam, a grandfather like Rehoboam, where did Asa's devotion to the Lord come from? What a an indication of God's grace that his reign lasted 41 years.
Last week and this weekend, I spent precious development time trying to rid myself of unwanted software on my coumputer called " Virtumonde ." Believe it or not, I'm pretty new to viruses and that kind of thing, coming from a background of developing on the Macintosh platform and using the Windows platforms to deliver product on. Well, this was a nasty wake up call to what Windows users have to deal with all the time. Virtumonde is called "Adware" and it's something that has sneaked on to your computer either by being installed along with some kind of trial software, or getting past your computer's defenses on the network. Its job is to watch what you do at all times with your computer, then occasionally pop up advertisements. In my case, most of the time, these advertisements were for anti-virus software. But they kept popping up an installation window for the software and beginning the installation even when I clicked, "no" for "do you w...
May 17 In today’s readings, I see our responsibility to steward our time well and make the most of our lives, since we have such a short time on earth. We see such evil and sorrow in that time, and Christ’s desire is to have us where He is (John 17:24). So for us to remain on earth serves a purpose and we need to diligently seek and fulfill it with the resources He has given us. Samuel’s mother saw this, and wanted it for him enough to give him up, though he was her only child, the desire of her heart. Paul clearly understood his indebtedness, not only to God, but to his neighbor, to declare the gospel clearly and completely, to edify those to whom he was sent. This is the first and greatest commandment and the second like unto it (Matthew 22:36-40) in a nutshell. 1 Samuel 1: What is more miraculous, the prophesied birth of Samuel after Hannah’s barrenness, or her willingness to give up her only begotten son to the Lord? I think both are part of the redemptive work of God in the ...
June 24 : How we need the work of the Spirit in our lives! Like our surface understanding of the Old Testament narratives, without God arresting us, giving us insight and empowering us, we can oversimplify events in our own life, at once setting ourselves up for disappointment with a too-optimistic expectation of “victory unto victory” or a too-hopeless picture of unrecoverable failure. Our limited knowledge of the Northern Kingdom makes it difficult to picture faithfulness among them: Idolatrous calf-worship at the extremities of the land, all wicked kings, rebellion and captivity. Yet it was the Northern Kingdom about which God said, “I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.” (1 Kings 19:18) Hopeless as any situation may sound, God can make a way. 1 Kings 1 : David is in sharp decline as 1 Kings begins, and we see something of the intrigue going on in his kingdom as a result. Was Adonijah tr...
