Day 117: 1 Kings 9-10

With all his fabulous wealth and understanding, does Solomon have any grasp of the fact that in doing business with the canaanites, in taking a wife from Egypt, in multiplying horses to himself and bringing them from Egypt, he's doing what the king is expressly forbidden to do in Deuteronomy 17:14-20? As he's beautifying Israel, building alliances, gaining fame and wealth, he's also laying a trap for himself.

Monday SOAP: Two mountains - Pisgah and Horeb - show powerful reasons for honoring God and His Law. Moses, himself the penman of the Law, suffers greatly because he cannot keep the spirit of it. (Deut 6:5; Lev. 19:18) This implies the holiness of the ultimate Source as well as the coming fulfillment and End (telos) of it. Tuesday SOAP: We are the salt of the earth; doesn't that sound nice? But do you know what was salted? Sacrifices offered with fire! I can even trick myself into looking at presenting my body a living sacrifice in too abstract a sense: it means self-denial, but also trouble, opposition, persecution, purifying fire. This must be faced without complaint if we really want to claim to be salt of the earth. S: “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
